Event #12- 2023 Season

Aa-The 1092nd event since the first race in 1949

Through the luck of the draw, infrequent visitor to Bowman Gray, Danny Bohn (Mooresville, N.C.) drew the pole for the Ortega 100 lap event with Luke Fleming outside.

For all modified 100 lap events, the fastest four qualifiers have the option of drawing for position with the rest of the field or take on the Fans Challenge. The competitors accepting the challenge drop to the rear for the start. Those drivers who battle back to a top four finish will be able to split the Fans Challenge prize pool. With no one taking the money in the last three races that put the prize pool

 at $12,000.

Burt Myers clocked the tight 1/4 mile speedway in 13.141 seconds. Jason Myers was second fastest and Lee Jefferys third fastest. All three accepted the challenge and elected to come from the rear.

Bohn was quick to take command of the event with Brandon Ward running second. A lap 47 restart gave Ward the opportunity to pull alongside Bohn and make a clean pass on the outside for the lead. That lead would only last until a lap 72 caution flag that brought Ward and Bohn  side by side for the rastart and this time Bohn overpowered the race leader and regained the top spot by lap 79, while Burt Myers methodically worked his way forward racing his way into 7th place.

On lap 83 the race had to be red flagged when Daniel Beeson and Kyle Southern crashed violently into the pit road retaining wall, both drivers were unhurt.

When racing resumed Bohn showed his strength resuming the race lead. With 3 to go Myers used the outside groove working over points leader Chris Fleming for fifth place but Fleming and Myers made contact sending Myers into the second turn barrier ending Myers night and a chance to collect any Fans Challenge bonus money.

Myers showed his displeasure by tossing a bucket of speedy-dry at Fleming’s car under the yellow flag caution. The event now went to a green, white, checkered finish and on lap 105  Bohn won for the 17th time at the Bowman Gray Stadium. The last win for him was the 2022 opener. Brandon Ward held on for the runner up spot with Tim Brown, Jonathan Brown and Junior Snow rounding out the first five positions.

“After he (Ward) got by me I thought it was all over ” Bohn said, “He had a pretty good run on the outside, it was a heck of a race, he run me hard but I ran him hard too. I’m glad to get another win here, it’s been a little while. We only run a handful of races here.” Bohn added, “I was really impressed with the outside groove tonight, the track gained a lot of grip, that’s the trouble with coming here just once in a while, the track changes quite a bit. I knew in practice we had a pretty good car.”

About the Myers, Fleming incident. Myers’ only comment was “He drove through me, he just drove through me.” Fleming had no comment.
